In today’s era of Computer generations, we see different types of computer. Many of them belong to fifth-generation computers.

Classification of the computer can be done according to different categories such as types of computer based on the size of the computer, based on working principle or based on brands of computer.

Types of computer based on working principle

Analog Computer

  • An analog computer may be a sort of computer that uses continuous physical phenomena like electrical, mechanical, or hydraulic quantities. 
  • This type of computer reads data using measurement and some programme scale. 
  • Analog Compute functions by measuring continuous changes in the physical quantities. Examples are Thermometer, Speedometer, Multimeter.

Digital Computer

  • A digital computer performs logical operations and calculations using a binary number system represented as digits.
  • Examples: desktops, mainframe computers.

Hybrid Computer 

  • A hybrid Computer is a  combination of both analog and digital computers that are capable of inputting and outputting both digital and analog signals.
  • It works by measuring quantities and logic operations.
  • A hybrid computer system setup offers a convenient and economical method of performing complex operations.
  • Examples are ECG Monitors

Types of computer based on Size

Classification of the computer by size includes Supercomputer, Mainframe Computer, Minicomputer, Microcomputer and Workstation.

Supercomputer

  • A super-computer is the most powerful computer in terms of performance and storage capacity.
  • They’re the fastest and costliest machines. Supercomputers have a very high processing speed compared to any other computers.
  • They are employed for specialised applications such as weather forecasting, meteorology, biomedical research, remote sensing, aircraft design, fluid dynamic calculations, atomic energy research, and petroleum exploration and other areas of science and technology.
  • They also have a multiprocessing technique. Supercomputers are built by interconnecting many microprocessors.
  • Examples of supercomputers are –
    • NASA: NASA uses supercomputers for launching and controlling space shuttles, and for space exploration purposes.
    • PARAM: It was the first super-computer from India developed by C-DAC, Pune.

Types of Computer: Uses and Functions

Mainframe Computer

  • Mainframe Computers is a very large and expensive computer used for handling major application in a large business organisation.
  • They can also be used as a centralised computer with several terminal users connected to them.
  • They can handle a huge amount of I/O operations and are capable of handling thousands of users at the same time.
  • In the hierarchy of types of different types of computer, mainframes are slightly below supercomputers. 
  • They contain large databases and are also known as super-servers.
  • In terms of performance i.e, executing many simultaneous programs beats super-computers because mainframe computers support more simultaneous programs whereas Supercomputers can execute a single programme at a time.
  • Mainframes are also used as controlling junctions in Wide Area Networks (WAN). 

Difference between Super-computer and Mainframe computers

The main difference between a supercomputer and a mainframe is that a supercomputer channels all its power into executing a single programme whereas a mainframe can execute many programs altogether.

Mini Computer

  • Mini Computers are also termed mid-sized computer.
  • This type of computer is more powerful than microcomputers but less powerful than mainframes computers.
  • Mini Computer is a multiprocessing system designed to cater to simultaneous users i.e., it can support multiple users at a time.
  • They are also used in connecting servers in Local Area Networks (LAN).

Micro Computer

  • It is a microprocessor digital computer used by individuals and is also known as Personal Computers (PC).
  • The microcomputer is at the lowest end of the computer range in terms of speed and storage capacity.
  • The first microcomputer was built by using 8-bit microprocessor chips and later ranges from 16-bit, 32-bit, and 64-bit chips. 
  • The PC supports many input and output devices.
  • Examples of the microcomputer are Laptop, Desktop, Palmtop, Notebooks.

Types of microcomputer used commonly-

  1. Desktop Computer: a private or micro-mini computer sufficient to suit a desk.
  2. Laptop: Laptop computers are portable computer complete with an integrated screen and keyboard. It is generally smaller in size than a personal computer and bigger than a pc.
  3. Palmtop: Palmtop computers are hand-sized computers.
    • Palmtops computers have no keyboard. Its touch screen serves both as an input and output device.
    • Examples of Palmtop computers are Digital Diary, Notebook, PDAs

Workstations

  • Workstation computers are terminal or personal computer connected with a network.
  • In this context, the workstation is simply a generic term for a user’s machine (client machine) in contrast to a “server” or “mainframe.”

Types of Computer based on Brand

IBM PC

  • The computers manufactured by IBM (International Business Machine) company are called IBM computers. IBM is one of the leading companies in the computer industry.

IBM Compatible Computers

  • Computers developed on the principle of IBM computers are called IBM compatible. It can perform all the tasks which IBM PC does, but it is less expensive than original (IBM) computers.

Apple/Macintosh

The computers manufactured by the Apple Company are called Apple Computers. They are specially used in Desktop designing. They are quite expensive compared to IBM and IBM Compatible.
